Pioneer werd in 1938 in Tokio, Japan opgericht door Nozomu Matsumoto - een man met een passie voor muziek die hij hoopte te delen met de wereld via luidsprekers van hoge kwaliteit. Die passie begon met een kleine operatie om luidsprekers in de garage van Matsumoto te repareren en te produceren.
